Connecting rods of high capacity, main and auxiliary engines are repaired by RA Power Solutions. Connecting rods during the operation of the engine are heavily stressed, transmitting power generated in the combustion chamber to the crankshaft. It is important that periodically or at the time of general overhauling, the condition of the connecting rod is checked and either it is replaced or connecting rod is reconditioned.

RA Power Solutions has four decades of experience in reconditioning of connecting rods up to the bore size of 500 mm. Following process is adopted for successful reconditioning of connecting rods:

I) Connecting rod is subject to chemical cleaning and shot blasting after dismantling.

II) The big end and small end bore of connecting rod are checked and recorded

III) Connecting rod is checked for cracks and overheating by MPI or Dye penetrant test.

IV) The serration of the joining face connecting rod bolts are also subject to crack detection.

V) Center to center distance of big end bore and small end bore is also checked.

VI) Straightness of connecting rod is also checked.

The connecting rods big end and small end are re-machined/bored on the latest design of the boring machine equipped with DRDO. All the connecting rods repaired by us are guaranteed for satisfactory performance and are 100% check for quality.

Connecting Rod Reconditioning – RA Power Solutions

The connecting rods of the engine are under the tremendous pressure. The connecting rod has to bear the extreme load and stress condition. In most of the cases connecting rods are made out of forging and composition of material is selected  to give enough strength to the connecting rod.

The continuous running, stopping and changing of direction combined with the weight of the piston and rpm of the engine put lot of stress on the connecting rod. This results to the development of various defects in connecting rod like excessive taper and ovality in big end and small end of connecting rod, loss of alignment of connecting rod, etc.

Following steps are followed for reconditioning and resizing of connecting rod

I) Connecting rod is checked for parallelism, alignment and taper and ovality in big end and small end.

II) Connecting rods having bend are not recommended for repair as per RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. experience.

III) Crack detection by MPI is done of connecting rod bolt sitting area and bolts. The connecting rod bolts again are under heavy stress all the time and develop hairline cracks. It is recommended to replace connecting rod bolts after certain hours of operation as specified in manual.

IV) The connecting rod big end is re-bored to the standard size and tolerances are maintained. In case of connecting rod small end it is recommended to replace the bush and re-bore it maintaining the center distance between the big end bore and small end bore as per the manufacturer’s specifications.
