Serious breakdown of Wartsila 12V32 diesel generating set installed in one of our client’s power plants in Madagascar was reported. RA Power Solutions deputed 2 senior engineers immediately to the site.

On inspection, the following were the main observations of the Wartsila 12V32 diesel-generating sets:

  • The bearing of CR pin no. 2 got seized due to the lack of lubrication.
  • The removal of bearing from the crankpin was a tough task as the bearing material got embedded in the CR pin.
  • After removal of bearing, the crankpin was subject to crack detection test by MPI. Multiple cracks with open mouth were observed even in the critical area of the crankpin like lubricating oil hole, and radius fillet.
  • On spot grinding on cracks was done. Even after stock removal of 4 mm in terms of depth, cracks were observed. Hence, the crankshaft was rejected.

Replacement of Crankshaft

  • The old and rejected crankshaft was removed.
  • All the main journal housings, connecting rods, and cylinder liners were calibrated.
  • Reconditioned standard-size crankshaft was supplied by RA power and floated in the crankcase, and the engine was rebuilt.
